1. What is SSL?
The Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocol, originally developed by Netscape, has become the universal standard on the Web for authenticating Web sites to Web browser users, and for encrypting communications between browser users and Web servers. Because SSL is built into all major browsers and Web servers, simply installing a digital certificate, or SSL Certificate, enables SSL capabilities.
2. What is a SSL Certificate?
Installed on your Web server, a SSL Certificate is a digital credential that enables visitors using Web browsers to verify your site's authenticity and to communicate with it securely via SSL encryption.
3. How do I enable SSL on my HERA VS 200/500 or MicroRack server?
You can access your SSL server with an URL like https://yourdomain.com/
Currently there is a generic certificate installed on your server. To create your own certificate you must telnet to your server and login as the administrator. Once logged in, type makecert. This command will create a new certificate in your /www/conf directory.
/www/conf/server.key is the privat key
/www/conf/server.crt is the certificate
and
/www/conf/server.csr is the certificate signing request.
This certificate signing request is needed to to purchase a signed certificate from either Thawte or Verisign.
Please note, that you have to use your domainname in the line
